Analysing Horror Genre Opening Scenes - Conclusion

Having analysed a number of horror film opening scenes, I have noticed the following genre conventions that are found in these scenes.
  • Enigma and mystery
  • Low-key lighting
  • Sinister non-diegetic music
  • Production companies associated with making films from the genre
  • Slow camera movement - pans, tracking shots, dollies, zooms
  • Slow editing/long takes
  • Jump cuts
  • Typical character types - the monster and the first victim
  • Isolated locations
  • Impact sounds
  • High angles and bird's-eye-view shots
  • Loose and tight framing (to suggest characters are vulnerable or trapped)
