Having analysed a number of horror film opening scenes, I have noticed the following genre conventions that are found in these scenes.
- Enigma and mystery
- Low-key lighting
- Sinister non-diegetic music
- Production companies associated with making films from the genre
- Slow camera movement - pans, tracking shots, dollies, zooms
- Slow editing/long takes
- Jump cuts
- Typical character types - the monster and the first victim
- Isolated locations
- Impact sounds
- High angles and bird's-eye-view shots
- Loose and tight framing (to suggest characters are vulnerable or trapped)
