Analysing Horror Genre Opening Scenes - Introduction

Now that I have a clear idea of the general conventions of opening scenes and I have researched my chosen genre, I am going to focus on the ways in which genre is used in opening scenes. In the next few posts I will be looking at a number of opening scenes from horror films and analysing how they use iconography of the genre, film language typical of the genre and how they introduce typical character types and themes. 

I will also look for any other ways the genre manifests itself through, for example, the use of genre-specific production companies or fonts that feel like they are appropriate for the genre.

I will be analysing the opening scenes from the following horror films:

'Happy Death Day'

'It Follows'

'Doctor Sleep'

'Midsommar'
